How to Compare the BMW X5 with the BMW X5 M Package
1. Compare the vehicles appearance. While the X5 is aggressive without the M package, the M package adds body color, front and rear bumpers and running boards as well as low-profile aluminum roof rails. These enhancements provide better aerodynamics and keep the vehicle planted at high speed. M logo door sills are also included.
2. Compare the wheels. The standard X5 comes with 18- or 19-inch alloy wheels, depending on which trim package you choose. The M Sport Package adds 20-inch M light alloy wheels with sport tires designed specifically for the X5.
3. Compare the interior features. The M package features a leather-wrapped M steering wheel as well as multicontoured sport bucket seats for the driver and front passenger. The package also includes brushed aluminum trim on the interior dashboard and door panels.

How to Rotate amp Balance the Tires on a BMW X5
1. Loosen the lug nuts that hold the X5s wheels on. You may want to use a breaker bar on the end of the tool that you are using.
2. Lift the BMW with a heavy duty floor jack and lower it onto jack stands at all four corners. Finish removing the lug nuts and the wheels, noting which corner of the vehicle each wheel was installed on.
3. Transport the wheels and tires to a tire shop with another vehicle so that the tire shop can balance the tires for you. Balancing tires should never be undertaken by an amateur, as it takes special tools and skills. Even if you have access to the equipment, do not do this unless you are familiar with the process of balancing tires.
4. Transport the wheels and tires back to where your X5 is supported on jack stands. If your X5 has the same size tires at all four corners, move the left rear wheel and tire to the left front, the left front to the back, the right rear to the front and the right front to the back.
5. If your X5 has staggered wheels, that is if the rear wheels are wider than the front wheels, do not perform any rotating. Simply replace the tires when they are worn. Lower the BMW off of the jack stands. Tighten the lug nuts on the wheels by hand with a tire iron.

DIY BMW E36 Front Strut

How to Identify the VIN on a BMW
1. Locate the VIN of your vehicle. BMW typically places the VIN number on the left side of the dash, through the windshield, or on the right inner fender of the car.
2. Read the first two characters of the VIN. The first character tells in what country the car was manufactured: 1 and 4 stand for the U.S., 2 for Canada, 3 for Mexico and W for Germany. The second character identifies the manufacturer of the vehicle. In our case, we need to make sure its B (for BMW).
3. Read characters three through nine. The third character indicates the vehicle type or manufacturing division. Characters four through eight reveal information about the cars body style, model, series and engine type. BMW has produced a wide range of vehicles with a variety of combinations of these characters. The ninth character is the VIN accuracy check digit.
4. Take down the last seven digits of the VIN. Enter them into an online service that allows anyone to check information about his BMW vehicle. You will see a list of specifications about your car, including its production year, type and other information.

How to Flush Coolant in a 2002 BMW 325XI
1. Drive your BMW onto a set of ramps and secure the parking brake.
2. Allow sufficient time for the BMW to cool down before beginning. Releasing pressure on a hot coolant system can cause severe burns to your skin from coolant vapor.
3. Open the radiator cap to release pressure on the coolant system.
4. Place a drainage pan under the petcock on the bottom of the radiator. Open the petcock with pliers and drain the contents of the radiator into the drain pan. With older vehicles, the petcock often corrodes. Breaking the petcock when trying to open it is an issue; to help avoid this issue, place a container large enough to catch all the fluid (approximately 4 gallons), remove the lower radiator hose and drain the fluid from there. Reconnect the petcock or place the hose back onto the radiator once drained.
5. Disconnect the cross over tube from the overflow tank and drain the fluid from the overflow tank into the drainage pan.
6. Fill the radiator with 4 gallons of distilled water, close the cap and run the engine until the radiator fan turns on. Allow the engine to cool off, then drain the fluid again. Repeat this process again or until the fluid that drains from the radiator is relatively clear.
7. Place 2 gallons of antifreeze into the radiator and 2 gallons of distilled water in the radiator. Run the engine with the cap off for a period of 5 minutes to expel air from the coolant system. Turn off the engine and top off the radiator with antifreeze. Place the cap back onto the radiator.

BMW Zagato was unveiled during Pebble Beach

Adrian van Hooydock, president of BMW design, and Norihiko Harada, Zagato Milano who plays the same role may increasingly better with each other. Based on the BMW Zagato Coupe which the two designers worked together this weekend will be an open version, the BMW Zagato Roadster. And that may be good news for those who prey upon a collectors item because it is plausible that the BMW Zagato Roadster, like the Coupe, only one copy builds. Munich, however, has so far not let you know if the cars they put in the window that they own or are museum pieces.
sDrive35is
Technically, the Roadster will probably not deviate from the Coupe, front and that means a six-cylinder with Twin Turbo technology and 340 hp. The donor car for the Zagato was closed after the BMW Z4 sDrive35is.

Press Release
New four-cylinder petrol engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology.
With the launch of a new generation of four-cylinder engines with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, the BMW 5 Series engines for the upper mid-range market now lead the way on efficiency and sporty power delivery in the petrol segment too. This world-exclusive technology equips the two 2.0-litre engines with twin-scroll turbocharging, High Precision Injection direct injection, VALVETRONIC variable valve timing and Double-Vanos variable camshaft timing. This combination of features is inspired by the technology package used on the multi-award-winning 225 kW/306 hp six-cylinder in-line BMW TwinPower Turbo engine of the BMW 535i. Now BMW has adopted this highly efficient performance-boosting technology in the four-cylinder engines as well. The system, which delivers the exhaust gases from each pair of cylinders to the turbine via two separate channels, both in the exhaust manifold and in the turbocharger itself, provides more responsive performance. The fuel supply is precisely metered by the direct-injection system with solenoid injectors, while the latest version of the VALVETRONIC system provides even more precise air mass control and, in combination with Double-Vanos variable intake and exhaust camshaft timing, optimises both efficiency and response.
As fitted in the new BMW 520i, the four-cylinder engine develops maximum power of 135 kW/184 hp at 5, 000 rpm and peak torque of 270 Newton metres (199 lb-ft), which is available between 1,250 and 4,500 rpm. Instantaneous power response helps the BMW 520i Sedan perform the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 7.9 seconds (automatic: 8.0 seconds), while the BMW 520i Touring accomplishes the same task in 8.3 seconds (automatic: 8.4 seconds). Top speeds are 227 km/h (141 mph) (automatic: 226 km/h / 140.4 mph) for the Sedan and 220 km/h (36.7 mph) (manual and automatic) for the Touring model. Simultaneous efficiency improvements are reflected in average fuel consumption (as per EU test cycle, depending on tyre format) of 6.8 - 7.0 l/100 km (40.3 - 41.5 mpg imp) (automatic: 6.5 - 6.7 litres / 42.2 - 43.5 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 157 - 163 grams (149 - 155 grams) per kilometre. For the BMW 520i Touring, the corresponding figures are 7.0 - 7.3 l/100 km (38.7 - 42.2 mpg imp) (automatic: 6.7 - 7.0 litres / 40.3 - 42.2 mpg imp) and 163 - 170 grams (automatic: 156 - 163 grams) per kilometre.
In the new BMW 528i, with modified turbocharging and injection technology, the four-cylinder engine develops maximum power of 180 kW/245 hp at 5,000 through 6,500 rpm, and peak torque of 350 Newton metres (258 lb-ft), which is available between 1,250 and 4,800 rpm. 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) is accomplished in 6.2 seconds for the new BMW 528i Sedan (automatic: 6.3 seconds), and 6.4 seconds for the BMW 528i Touring (automatic: 6.6 seconds). Top speeds are 250 km/h (155 mph) for the Sedan and 244 km/h (151.6 mph) for the Touring model (in both cases the figures are the same for both manual and automatic versions). The new BMW 528i Sedan achieves average fuel consumption (as per EU test cycle, depending on tyre format) of 6.8 - 7.1 l/100 km (39.8 - 41.5 mpg imp) (automatic: 6.5 - 6.8 litres / 41.5 - 43.5 mpg imp), and CO2 emissions of 159 - 165 grams (automatic: 152 - 158 grams) per kilometre. For the new BMW 528i Touring, the corresponding figures are 7.1 - 7.4 l/100 km (38.3 - 39.8 mpg imp) (automatic: 6.8 - 7.1 litres / 39.8 - 41.5 mpg imp) and 165 - 172 grams (automatic: 159 - 166 grams) per kilometre.
BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition: unique in the upper mid-range segment - a premium sedan with CO2 emissions of 119 g/km.
From autumn 2011, in parallel with the regular BMW 520d, an ultra-fuel-efficient version of this sedan will be offered: the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition. With unchanged maximum power (135 kW/184 hp) and torque (380 Newton metres / 280 lb-ft), this model records average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 4.5 l/100 km (62.8 mpg imp) and CO2 emissions of 119 grams per kilometre. This is around ten per cent better consumption than the most fuel-efficient segment competitors, despite the fact that the BMW 520d EfficientDynamics Edition is more powerful than the competitor models.
With a 0-100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of 8.2 seconds and a top speed of 231 km/h (143.5 mph), even this most fuel-efficient model in the BMW 5 Series boasts typical sporty BMW performance. Its extra-efficient 2.0-litre diesel engine is, like that of the familiar BMW 520d, equipped with a centrifugal pendulum absorber which reduces irregular running at low engine speeds for greater refinement. It is also combined with a range of other efficiency-enhancing measures. These include Auto Start-Stop, an Optimum Shift Indicator, Brake Energy Regeneration and active cooling flap control, plus a longer final drive ratio and special aero rims with "Streamline" styling.

How to Install Spark Plugs in a 1997 BMW 328i
1. Look on the underside of the 328i’s hood and find the emissions label. Find the spark plug gap listed on the emissions label. Check the gap on all six new NGK BKR6EK, or equivalent spark plugs, with a spark plug gap tool. If the gap is not within the specifications listed on the emissions label, exchange the spark plugs for new ones, as they are not adjustable.
2. Unscrew the engine oil cap and pull upward on the passenger’s side of the engine cover -- the one that reads “BMW” -- to remove it, exposing the ignition coils below it.
3. Pull outward on the retaining tabs on a coil pack and pull the wiring harness from the coil pack. Remove the four coil pack-retaining nuts with a ratchet and socket. If the coil pack you are working on has a ground strap attached to its mounting stud, make note of the wire’s position and pull the ground wire off the mounting stud -- only one coil has this wire. Pull the coil upward with a slight twisting motion to remove it.
4. Remove the spark plug with a ratchet, 6-inch extension and spark plug socket. Remove the spark plug from the spark plug socket. Press a new spark plug into the spark plug socket until the rubber insert inside the spark plug socket holds it in place. Hand-thread the spark plug into the engine with a 6-inch extension and a 6-inch socket.
5. Torque the spark plug to between 15 to 22 foot-pounds with a torque wrench, 6-inch extension and spark plug socket.
6. Line up the boot on the bottom of the coil pack with the top of the spark plug. Press the coil pack downward until you feel it click onto the spark plug. Press the coil pack wiring harness into the receptacle on the coil pack until the locking tabs click into place.
7. If the coil pack you are reinstalling had the coil ground wire attached, slide the ground wire onto the coil’s mounting stud. Hand-tighten the four coil pack nuts, then tighten them with a ratchet and socket.
8. Repeat Steps 3 through 7 to replace the remaining five spark plugs.
9. Line up the pins on the underside of the engine cover with the rubber mounts on the top of the engine, and set the cover on top of the engine. Tighten the oil cap to secure the cover in place.

How to Compare BMW Series With Other Luxury Cars
1. Find vehicles in competing classes. Check the lineups of other luxury brands that compete with BMW, such as Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Lexus, Acura, Jaguar, Infiniti, Lincoln, Cadillac and Buick. The exact models you compare will depend on the BMW model in question. Compile a list of competing vehicles.
2. Check the specifications of the competing vehicles with those of the BMW. The specifications of the vehicles can all be found easily on their manufacturers websites. Compare the features that you desire. For example, users who value performance will be concerned with horsepower. Other users may value safety and safety features will be of chief importance. Compare the list of features and specifications of the vehicles, paying special attention to those you are most concerned with.
3. Compare the vehicles prices. Remember a vehicles cost does not only include the price of the car, but also its fuel economy and the cost of maintenance, warranties and insurance. While one car may have a cheaper sticker price, it may in fact be more expensive in the long run. Compare the long- and short-terms costs of the vehicles.
4. Check expert reviews. Publications like Road & Track and Car & Driver often compare models in certain classes of cars and give reviews on specific models. Websites like Edmunds also have very thorough car reviews. Check out what the experts say and take into account their opinions when making a decision.

How to Change a BMW Door Handle
1. Remove the plastic cap that conceals the screw that holds the housing to the door panel. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry the cap off.
2. Remove the screw that holds the door handle housing to the door panel with a screwdriver. The housing should now come loose.
3. Pull the housing gently away from the door panel. The door handle will still be connected to the release cable, so only pull it as far as the cable will allow you to.
4. Disconnect the door release cable with a pair of long needle nose pliers. The cable is fastened with a hook that needs to be wiggled and pulled off of the large metal hook on the door handle. You should now be able to remove the door handle and housing from the door panel and set it aside.
5. Install the new assembly by hooking the door release cable over the hook on the new door handle assembly. It will help to turn the housing 180-degrees (upside down) and hook the cable on. Once the cable is hooked on, turn the assembly back around, being careful not to scratch the leather.
6. Place the housing partially back in the door panel. Place the cable in the guide groove of the housing. This cable must be installed in the groove in order for the door to open. Push the door handle into place in the door panel.
7. Reinstall the screw that holds the door handle housing to the door panel. Reinstall the plastic cover that conceals the screw. Test the door handle to ensure that it is working correctly.

How to Jack Up a BMW
Front Jacking
1. Park your vehicle on level ground. Turn the engine off and engage the emergency brake.
2. Position yourself so you can see under the front end of your vehicle. Look for a black jack-point in the middle of the front sub-frame, or use the sub-frame. The vehicle might be equipped with a round jack-point in between the front wheels, on the skid plate. The stock, BMW jack fits in that spot.
3. Place the jack under the sub-frame or jack point. Raise the jack until it lifts the car far enough to place jack stands under the frame. Place one jack stand on each side of the vehicle -- under the sub-frame -- for support.
4. Lower the jack until the vehicle is securely resting on the jack stands. Remove the jack from under the car. Place blocks in the back of your rear tires for extra support.
Rear Jacking
5. Park your vehicle on level ground. Turn the engine off and engage the emergency brake.
6. Locate the rear differential. Locate the adjacent U brace. Do not place the jack directly on the differential; the pressure might damage it.
7. Place the jack under the U brace. Raise the jack until the car is at a convenient height.
8. Place blocks in front of your front tires for extra support.

Do It Yourself Oil Change for a BMW 325i
1. Drive the vehicle onto the ramps and engage the emergency brake.
2. Slide the oil bucket beneath the vehicle at the oil plug location. BMW uses a skid plate with an easy access cover for the oil drain plug. Place the oil bucket beneath this access panel.
3. Open the access panel (in the center of the skid plate and labeled). Remove the oil plug using the 17 mm wrench. Allow the oil to drain until you have only a few drops dripping out. Replace the oil plug and tighten to between 20 and 25 foot-pounds of torque using a torque wrench. Leave the access panel open.
4. Remove oil filter housing cap using a filter strap wrench or by hand. You can use an adjustable wrench if desired. The cap is located center-front of the engine compartment, directly in front of the fan, accessed from above the engine. Pull the cap and filter out. The filter removes with the cap.
5. Replace the filter by sliding the old one off of the tube attached to the cap and sliding the new one onto the tube. Inspect the rubber grommets at the base of the tube and above the threads on the cap. Replace with the rubber grommets included with the new filter if you notice signs of looseness or damage. Reinstall the cap by hand and tighten one-quarter further with a strap or adjustable wrench.
6. Remove the oil fill cap. Pour 6.9 quarts of synthetic 5W-30 motor oil into the oil fill tube (labeled on top of the engine). Replace the oil fill cap and start the vehicle. Allow the motor to run for 2 minutes. Monitor the access panel beneath the vehicle and the oil filter cap for signs of leaks. Leaks would imply a damaged gasket or improper tightening. Correct the error and retest.
7. Close the access panel for the oil drain plug. Check the oil level with the engine oil dipstick. Fill as necessary.
